What is STEM Racing?

STEM Racing is an exciting global educational program designed for young people aged 12 to 19, offering an immersive experience in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM).

The program is inspired by Formula 1 and aims to develop future leaders in innovation by challenging teams to design and race miniature F1 cars, all while simulating the real-world workings of a Formula 1 team.

Goal

The primary goal of STEM Racing is to form a functioning Formula 1 team, with each member contributing to a specific role within the team, just as they would in a real-world company.

Team members are responsible for various aspects of the project, including:

Management

Engineering

Finance Management

Graphic Design

Marketing and Social Media

Competition Stages

The STEM Racing competition is made up of several stages:

  • 1. Team Formation

  • 2. Planning

  • 3. Design

  • 4. Building

  • 5. Testing

  • 6. Branding

  • 7. Final Event

Car Design Process

The car design process starts with research into aerodynamics and what makes F1 cars fast. Teams then sketch different ideas and choose the best one to develop.

Using 3D CAD software, they build a digital model of their car. They test this design through simulations to see how it performs, especially in terms of speed and air resistance.

Based on the results, they make small changes to improve it. Once the design is finalized, it’s ready to be manufactured and tested in real life.

Racing & Reaction Time

Racing in STEM Racing is all about speed, accuracy, and quick thinking. Cars are launched down a track using a reaction time system.

One team member presses the launch button as soon as the light turns green. A fast reaction time can make a big difference in the final race results.

Teams also aim to build the fastest and most stable car, but winning often depends on both good engineering and the driver’s ability to react quickly at the start.

Presentation & Portfolios

As part of the competition, teams must give a presentation and prepare a portfolio.

The presentation is where teams explain their work, including how they designed the car, managed their team, and promoted their brand. Judges look for clear communication, teamwork, and understanding of the project.

The portfolio is a written record of the whole process, with sections on design, marketing, finances, and team roles. It helps show the effort, planning, and learning behind the final result.
